Hugo Denis is a French composer born in 2002, now living in Montréal, QC. He started studying piano interpretation and music theory at the age of 6, before entering the Conservatory of Music of Geneva at the age of 10. He then studied with the concert pianist Christian Chamorel for six years during which he won several prizes in a Spanish music competition and the second prize for best interpretation in a Schubert competition. He then moved to Montréal in 2018 after having met the Orchestra conductor Jocelyn Leblanc a year earlier. Leblanc instructed him with composition and orchestration concepts for 2 years, while he continued studying interpretation at the Coopérative des professeurs de musique with Dr. David Bergeron, a Montréal based pianist. Hugo then attended the music school of Vincent d’Indy in Montréal for two years where he continued studying composition with the composer Jean-Michel Rousseau and interpretation with the pianist Constance Joanis, and where he obtained a DEC in music, an award for the highest notes in his program, and a nomination for the Governor’s medal.
In 2021, he won with his first sonata the first prize in composition in both the « Festival de musique classique de Montréal » and the CFMTA’s national competition, as well as the grand prize Helen’s Dahlstorm. In 2022, he reiterated the experience with the « Festival de musique classique de Montréal ».
Hugo is now studying composition since 2022 in McGill University (Schulich School of music) under Melissa Hui, Christopher Harman, and Jean Lesage. He is also still studying interpretation with the pianist Stéphane Lemelin.
